At Skin Southwest, we use the IPL Lumina machine to offer a permanent hair management system to cure and remove your unwanted hair. Short pulses of light are released on the area of the body being treated, targeting many hair follicles simultaneously.
Light is selectively absorbed by melanin, which is the pigment in the hair follicle. The energy heats the pigment and effectively destroys the follicle without damaging the surrounding cells. A series of treatments are needed to ensure all hair is destroyed, but the result is the beautiful silky smooth skin you’ve been longing for.

Most people are suitable for laser hair removal treatment. The best results are often achieved with clients who have fair skin and dark hair, as darker hair has a high concentration of melanin and therefore is more easily treated. Fair hair contains less melanin and so is harder to treat, but it is still possible. We recommend you have a consultation to ascertain if laser hair removal will be successful for you.
Grey and white hair has no melanin, so it is not suitable for laser hair removal treatment.
Treatment sensations can vary but are virtually pain-free. Typically no anaesthetic is required and most clients describe it as moderate and tolerable.
Once heat is introduced, the hair follicles collapse if they are in the active stage of growing. However, the hairs will still remain in the follicles until shedding stage. The dead hairs shed after 1-3 weeks as the epidermis renews. During this period, the hairs will seem to ‘grow’ as they are pushed out by the new epidermis. Maintenance and top up treatments will still be required in the future to keep your skin hair free and silky smooth.
The skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen and bumpy, but this usually subsides within a few hours.
Only hair that is actively growing is affected, therefore multiple treatments are needed. Treatment is conducted every 4-8 weeks, depending on the area treated, until a satisfactory result is seen. The required number of treatments varies, but typically six or more treatments are needed for optimum results.
Laser treatment does not guarantee permanent hair removal, but most people see their results lasting for the long term, even years in some cases. Many patients do find that their hair does not return. After your initial course of treatment, you may need regular top up treatments, but the need for these is usually minimal and sometimes spaced years apart.
Typically, you would need to leave 4-6 weeks between each laser hair removal session. In some cases, we may suggest leaving a slightly longer gap. We discuss your individual course of treatments in detail during your initial consultation, and let you know when you can safely have more treatment in order to maintain your results.
We can’t guarantee laser treatment will remove 100% of unwanted hair, but it does significantly and successfully reduce hair growth. In the majority of cases, patients experience long lasting results, with minimal need for top up treatments.
