Q&A Article for West MagazinePosted on: 14th March 2017
Q: With winter almost behind us, I want to kick start my skincare regime for Spring so it looks in the best condition possible especially for the summer as I have a lot of events to attend. What can I do make sure it is in tip top condition?
A: During the winter months, changes in temperature from outdoors to indoors can wreck havoc on your delicate skin and conditions such as rosacea can worsen and also with patients that have threadveins on the face.
With the forecast for brighter days ahead, it is now time to make over your skin care regime.
Step up sun protection. The number one antiaging product that all aesthetic practitioners agree on is sunscreen. For maximum protection, use a small amount all over your face and do not forget your neck and back of hands. Pick a moisturising sunscreen formulated with antioxidants to block UV rays and to protect the skin from free radical damage and environmental pollutants. ( Image Skincare: Prevention Plus Range £46).
Look for lighter formulas. Ditching the heavier formulas for spring is important as your skin can get oilier which means your complexion can handle stronger skin care ingredients. Retinol is great and I like to think of it as rocket fuel for its antiaging benefits. In winter, retinol can be quite drying but the benefits are improvement of skin tone, reducing the appearance of fine lines.
Exfoliate regularly. The combination of heavy moisturisers and central heating can leave your skin looking patchy and dull. I personally recommend a product that contains glycolic acid to increase cellular renewal and help your skin to look younger.
A medical grade chemical peel such as the Perfect Peel contains antiaging ingredients such as glutathione as well as retinoic and gycolic acid for increased cell turnover that allows a smoother and brighter looking complexion.
Focus on cleansing. Spring is the perfect time to focus on cleansing your skin to reveal a brighter, more dewy complexion. Switching to a lighter formula and even changing your cleanser to a different range can allow the skin to work better. Cleanse in a circular motion and focus onn more congested areas in a smaller circular motion whilist cleansing the majority of the face with a large gentle circular motions.
Cleansing your face with a product that contains AHA’s or BHA’s to rid your skin of those dead, dull skin cells is a must in your spring skin regime. These products are generally best used once or twice per week so there is then less irritation than if used too regularly.
Changes in make up. Detox your makeup bag. Organise your makeup collection and get rid of old/ outdated makeup and switch to spring colours in sheerer lighter textures.
Nutritional supplements. Drinking a collagen drink will help plump up and keep your skin looking vibrant and youthful. Adding fish oils to your daily intake will also keep your skin looking smooth and supple. ( Gold Collagen Rx – £50 for 10 bottles)
