How does Resurface work?

Resurface treatment is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the texture and appearance of the skin by removing damaged outer layers and stimulating collagen production.

Minute sections of the skin are targeted with laser light, which penetrate into the tissue, causing small columns of thermal damage to stimulate significant collagen renewal. The surrounding non-affected areas of skin aid the body’s natural recovery process, for dramatic results without significant downtime. A warm, heating sensation is felt during treatment with some mild stinging. After treatment the skin can be quite hot and so cooling packs are used to minimise discomfort.

FAQs

You will experience a mild sunburn sensation for a few hours after treatment and the skin may be red for 1 to 2 days. This is a normal sign that the skin is healing at a deep level. Swelling is likely but minimal, and resolves in 2 to 3 days. As the healing process occurs, your skin may have a ‘bronzed’ appearance that lasts from 3 to 10 days, depending on the treatment level. Your skin will naturally exfoliate and may flake as if you had mild sunburn.

A resurface treatment is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the texture and appearance of the skin by removing damaged outer layers and stimulating collagen production. Common resurfacing methods include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments. These procedures exfoliate the skin’s surface, encouraging the growth of new, healthier skin cells. The specific method used depends on the patient’s skin concerns and goals.

Resurface treatments offer several benefits, including:

  • Improved skin texture and tone.
  • Reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Minimised pore size.
  • Treatment of sun damage and age spots.
  • Enhanced skin elasticity and firmness.
  • Overall skin rejuvenation.

Resurface treatments can be customised to suit various skin types and tones, but the choice of method should be made by a qualified practitioner based on individual skin characteristics and concerns. We will discuss your suitability at your initial consultation.

The downtime after a resurface treatment can vary depending on the specific procedure used. For example, microdermabrasion may have minimal downtime, while deeper chemical peels or laser treatments may result in several days of redness, peeling, and sensitivity. Proper aftercare, including sun protection and skincare, is essential to ensure safe healing.

Depending on the treatment area, between 3-8 sessions are recommended. The treatments themselves are carried out every 4-6 weeks and, following the end of a course of treatment, top up sessions can be performed once or twice a year. Many people notice visible improvements after just one treatment, but a series of sessions, usually spaced a few weeks apart, may be recommended for more significant and long-lasting results.

The timeline for results can vary, with some improvements becoming noticeable shortly after the procedure and continued enhancement over several weeks to months. Top up treatments and frequent reviews will ensure correct product placement and maintenance of results over time.
